Ángel Guillén Captures Double Titles and Leads Los Jefes to Victory at WPT Australia

Ángel Guillén had a memorable run at WPT Australia, capturing two titles in 72 hours and leading his team, Los Jefes, to victory in the debut Team Tournament format. The WPT Global Ambassador collected a total of AU$321,000 from his wins in the AU$5,000 Mad Max and AU$20,000 Super High Roller events, along with a US$10,000 seat to December’s WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas.

Guillén’s success began with the AU$5,000 Mad Max event, where his steady aggression and instinctive reads carried him to victory. “That first win came from playing confidently and trusting my instincts, even with some unconventional decisions. Everything clicked,” he said.

The AU$20,000 Super High Roller title followed soon after, despite Guillén sleeping only three hours before the event. The final came down to a heads-up battle between Guillén and his teammate Sergio Barrios. “I didn’t feel at my best, but I ran great and had incredible support from my team. Facing Sergio in the final was surreal. It was one of the most special moments of the series,” Guillén shared.

In the new Team Tournament, Los Jefes — composed of Guillén, Sergio Barrios, Bernardo Crespo, Tomás Szwarcberg, and Diego Ponce — dominated from start to finish. The team accumulated 3,605 points to secure the AU$12,000 top prize. “We pretty much destroyed the competition,” Guillén said. “The points difference between us and the others was spectacular. We had five wins.”

Currently second on Mexico’s all-time money list with US$2.7 million in earnings, Guillén joked that if he overtakes JC Alvarado for the top spot, Alvarado will come out of retirement. “It’s a friendly competition,” he laughed.

Away from the tables, Guillén balances poker and family life with his wife, WPT host Lynn Gilmartin, and their four-year-old son. “Poker teaches self-reflection, but family always comes first,” he said.

After his strong performance at WPT Australia, Guillén now sets his sights on the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas in December, entering the next stage with great momentum.
