Klemens Roiter won his first Triton Poker title on September 5, taking down Event #2, the $20,000 NLH 8-Handed tournament at Triton Jeju, for $771,000.
The 35-year-old Austrian topped a field of 174 entries. The tournament generated a $3.48 million prize pool, with Alejandro Lococo finishing runner-up after beginning heads-up play with a substantial chip lead.
Roiter had come close on Triton several times before Jeju. His record included final tables in four Main Events, where he had finished seventh, fifth, third and second.
Roiter Comes Back From 19 Big Blinds Heads-Up
Lococo began heads-up play with 51 big blinds against Roiter's 19.
Roiter reduced the deficit before a pair of consecutive hands put him in front.
He limped J-7 in the first of them and paired his jack on a J-3-2 flop. Lococo checked and called with 10-9, then paired his nine on the turn. Roiter bet again and continued on the river with an all-in shove. Lococo called, and Roiter's pair of jacks brought the stacks close to even.
On the following hand, Roiter checked his option with 7-2 and paired his seven on a 5-7-10 flop. A second seven on the turn gave him trips, while a five on the river filled his full house.
Roiter shoved the river. Lococo called with Q-J and lost most of his remaining stack, leaving him with less than one big blind.
Lococo doubled once before the tournament ended. Roiter's 10-8 made a pair of eights on the final hand to beat Lococo's A-9 and secure the title.
Roiter Recovered From Seven Big Blinds on Day 2
Roiter had started Day 2 with 17 big blinds and dropped as low as seven with 14 players remaining.
He recovered to 3,575,000 chips, or 29 big blinds, by the start of the nine-handed final table. Yu Zhang led with 6,075,000, followed closely by Webster Lim with 6,000,000. Lococo was third with 4,825,000.
The lineup also included former Triton champions Ding Biao, Jesse Lonis, Lim and Mehdi Chaoui.
Ding was the first finalist eliminated, taking $78,000 for ninth place. Lonis finished eighth for $94,000 after his pocket jacks lost to Lococo's J-7 when another seven arrived on the turn.
Yu Zhang went out seventh for $130,000 after moving all-in with K-8 and running into Justin Saliba's pocket aces.
Lim followed in sixth for $179,000. His A-K was ahead of Chaoui's Q-J before a queen landed on the flop and a jack followed on the turn.
The Taiwanese player who finished fifth collected $233,000.
Lococo Eliminates Two Players to Reach Heads-Up
With four players remaining, Saliba moved all-in from the button with Q-J. Chaoui called from the small blind with pocket nines, and Lococo joined the pot from the big blind with A-10.
Lococo won the hand and eliminated both players. Chaoui took $292,000 for fourth, while Saliba earned $358,000 for third.
That left Lococo and Roiter heads-up, with Lococo holding 51 big blinds to Roiter's 19. The advantage did not last.
Roiter's two large pots with J-7 and 7-2 reversed the chip counts, and he closed out the tournament shortly afterward.
First Triton Title After Repeated Deep Runs
Roiter had been a regular on the Triton Super High Roller Series for roughly two and a half years and had repeatedly reached the late stages of events without winning a title.
After the victory, he said his entire body was still shaking and described himself as happy and proud. He also credited the amount of time he had spent travelling between live stops and working on his game.
The $771,000 payout is not the largest tournament cash of Roiter's career. It is, however, his first Triton title.
